Baked Ham & Cheese Sarmie

Traditionally the croque-monsieur originated in French cafés and bars as a quick snack. This is our #JustDelicious version.

8 slices

Eskort Chopped Ham, sliced

all-purpose flour

375 ml

full cream milk

30 g

whole grain mustard

2.5 ml

ground nutmeg




thick slices of bread, of your choice

250 g

strong white cheddar cheese, grated

5 ml

dried mixed herbs


Spray n’ Cook


To make the béchamel

  • Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat until foamy.

  • Add flour and cook, stirring, until mixture is pale and flour is fully combined, about 3 minutes.

  • Gradually add milk, whisking until mixture is smooth.

  • Cook until sauce has thickened, about 4 minutes, whisking continuously.

  • Remove from heat and whisk in mustard and nutmeg and season with salt.


  • Preheat oven to 220°C and grease an oven baking tray with spray and cook.

  • Spread all bread slices with béchamel, dividing evenly and extending all the way to the edges.

  • Place 4 slices of bread, béchamel side up, on the oven tray and top with Eskort chopped ham and half of the cheese.

  • Top with remaining slices of bread, béchamel side up, then top with remaining cheese and sprinkle with mixed herbs.

  • Place tray in oven and bake until cheese is brown and bubbling, 10–15 minutes.

  • Remove from oven and serve while hot.
