Hot Dogs with Caramelised Onion & Smoor

A hot dog is not a hot dog without tomato, this #JustDelicious version of our favourite street food includes a mega-easy to make and traditional tomato smoor!

Eskort Smoked Viennas


hot dog rolls


butter for rolls

Caramelised onions



large onions, sliced into half moons

15 ml

olive oil

20 g

brown sugar




ground black pepper




2 onions, finely chopped

2 cloves

garlic, finely chopped

30 ml

olive oil

2 cans

chopped tomatoes

50 g

tomato paste

10 ml





  • Slice rolls open and butter, set aside.

  • In a frying pan, heat olive oil and fry Viennas until cooked through and lightly browned, remove from pan and set aside.

  • In the same pan, add onions (and a little more olive oil if needed).

  • Fry onions until softened, then add sugar, stir, and fry gently for another 8 - 10 minutes until golden and caramelised, remove from heat and set aside.

  • In another pan, fry onions and garlic for smoor, until softened.

  • Add chopped tomatoes, tomato paste and sugar and simmer for 10 minutes. Add 250 ml water, season with salt and pepper and simmer for 25 - 30 minutes, stirring often, until slightly thickened and well cooked.

  • Remove from heat and set aside.

  • Assemble hot dogs with 2 Viennas each and a generous helping of caramelised onion and smoor.

  • Serve and enjoy!
